Poems | Miyah Poetry Series (Curated by Shalim M Hussain) - Part 4

Evening Raga  by Anil Karanjai  (Oil on canvas)

Our Revolution
Rezwan Hussain

Scold us
Kick us if you will
Patiently we will continue to build
Your mansions, roads, bridges
Patiently we will keep pulling your tired, fat,
Sweaty bodies in cycle rickshaws
We will polish your marble floors
Until they sparkle
Beat your dirty clothes
Until they are white
We will plump you up with fresh fruits and vegetables
And when you come visiting us in Tapajuli char,
We will offer you not just milk
But fresh cream

You continue to abuse us
Even today we are the thorn in your eye

But don’t they say: Patience has its limits
Broken snails can cut through flesh
Even we can turn revolutionaries
Our revolution will not need guns
Our revolution will not need dynamite
Our revolution will not run on national television
Our revolution will not be published
On no walls will our revolution be painted
In red and blue clenched fists

Yet our revolution will singe, burn
Reduce your souls to ashes.

Don't insult me as a Miyah
Abdur Rahim

Don’t insult me as Miyah
Anymore
I ashamed to
Introduce myself
As Miyah no more.
You may love me
You may hate me
I lose nothing no more
I gain nothing no more
Don’t insult me as a Miyah
Anymore.

You may love me
You may hate me
Patronize me no more.
Pull me in your arms
And pin a dagger on my back no more.
Don’t insult me as a Miyah
Anymore.

Look no more on my sun burnt back
For barb wire scratches
But please,
Please don't forget '83, '94, '12, '14.
Please don't call my burns
The scratch marks of barbed wires anymore
don’t insult me as a Miyah
Anymore.
Please don't squeeze out my blood
And ink ballads on nationalism
Don’t peer into my mouth
The milk teeth are there no more.
Don’t insult me as Miyah
Anymore
I ashamed to
Introduce myself
As Miyah no more.

I don’t know my name today
Chan Miyah

I don’t know my name today
Lost: it’s lost in misspellings, taunts, jeers
And the quagmire of your office papers, closets, cabinets.
From Fazr Ali born at dawn
To Fazal Ali the class captain
To Fazal Miya singer of Magun songs
To a nameless Bangladeshi labourer in Guwahati
I have lived many names, many lives
But none of my own.

While selling myself in the labour bazaar
I remembered how numbers were squared
While pulling sheaves of corn I remembered Magun and Magun soothed me
On my haunches at the detention camp
I thought-
Didn’t I make this building?

I have nothing now
But an old lungi, a half-ripe beard
And a photocopied sheet of the ’66 voters’ list
With my grandfather’s name burnt in it.

Yes, I have no name today
But don’t dangle before my eyes the name you have given me.

Don’t call me a Bangladeshi
I don’t need your barbs
Don’t condescend with ‘Neo-Assamese’
Give me nothing
But what I own.

I will find a name someday
And you won’t fish it out for me.

Poems | Miyah Poetry Series (Curated by Shalim M Hussain) - Part 3

Miyah Poetry proper started on 29th April 2016 when Hafiz Ahmed posted the poem 'Write Down I am a Miyah' on his Facebook page. Shalim M Hussain wrote a response to the same first in English on the same day and then in one of the Char-Chapori dialects on 30th April. Shahjahan Ali's poem was written a couple of days later. As such, what started as one poem and a response turned into a series of poems by fifteen poets from all over Assam.

The Wall, Anil Karanjai

Write Down ‘I am a Miyah’
Hafiz Ahmed

Write
Write Down
I am a Miya
My serial number in the NRC is 200543
I have two children
Another is coming
Next summer.
Will you hate him
As you hate me?

write
I am a Miya
I turn waste, marshy lands
To green paddy fields
To feed you.
I carry bricks
To build your buildings
Drive your car
For your comfort
Clean your drain
To keep you healthy.
I have always been
In your service
And yet
you are dissatisfied!
Write down
I am a Miya,
A citizen of a democratic, secular, Republic
Without any rights
My mother a D voter,
Though her parents are Indian.

If you wish kill me, drive me from my village,
Snatch my green fields
hire bulldozers
To roll over me.
Your bullets
Can shatter my breast
for no crime.

Write
I am a Miya
Of the Brahamaputra
Your torture
Has burnt my body black
Reddened my eyes with fire.
Beware!
I have nothing but anger in stock.
Keep away!
Or
Turn to Ashes.

Nana I Have Written
Shalim M Hussain

Nana I have written attested countersigned
And been verified by a public notary
That I am a Miyah
Now see me rise
From flood waters
Float over landslides
March through sand and marsh and snakes
Break the earth’s will draw trenches with spades
Crawl through fields of rice and diarrhea and sugarcane
And a 10% literacy rate
See me shrug my shoulders curl my hair
Read two lines of poetry one formula of math
Read confusion when the bullies call me Bangladeshi
And tell my revolutionary heart
But I am a Miyah
See me hold by my side the Constitution
Point a finger to Delhi
Walk to my Parliament my Supreme Court my Connaught Place
And tell the MPs the esteemed judges and the lady selling
Trinkets and her charm on Janpath
Well I am Miyah.
Visit me in Kolkatta in Nagpur in the Seemapuri slums
See me suited in Silicon Valley suited at McDonalds
Enslaved in Beerwa bride-trafficked in Mewat
See the stains on my childhood
The gold medals on my PhD certificate
Then call me Salma call me Aman call me Abdul call me Bahaton Nessa
Or call me Gulam.
See me catch a plane get a Visa catch a bullet train
Catch a bullet
Catch your drift
Catch a rocket
Wear a lungi to space
And there where no one can hear you scream,
Thunder
I am Miyah
I am Proud.

I am Yet a Miyah
Shahjahan Ali Ahmed

Mine is the story of
A burning bone-crunching sun
My manhood the cautionary tale
Of bent shoulders
And the pricking of salted thorns
Mine is the story of
‘Grow more food’, man-eaters
Cholera, diarrhea
And a fragrant revolution scattered by
My fathers
In a forest of thorns
Mine is a story of heroes.
Mine is the sacrificial offering of ‘61
Of blood screaming through
The binds of history
Mine is the story of 83, 90-94, 2008, 2012, 2014.
Mine is the oppression, the ignominy
The deprivation of Dravidians in Pragjyotishpur
I am the colour of a shame
Holding its ears, bending its knees
While kings and dynasties pass
I am the one under the fool’s cap
Standing in line with dumb cattle
I am a painting of heritage
Hung in a stable
Because though the bottles look different
The wine is yet the same
And judging by birth alone, I am yet a Miyah.

A Charuwa Youth vs The People (2000)

Hafiz Ahmed (Translated by Shalim M Hussain)

Milord
Yes, we are brothers
He and I
Brothers from the same family.
Yet kokai* is so bent
On being king
That he disproves
Blood relations.

Milord
Contrary to his claims
I am not his step-brother
Mother and son
Were not separated
When I was born
He has eavesdropped too often
On the whispers
Of friends and foes
And muddled his own head.
This might be why
He repeatedly declares me illegitimate.

Milord
Very often he goes mute
And his anger flows in frenzied gestures
Sometimes in ungodly rage
He tears the flesh
From his body.
Not once does he wonder
Why six of our own sisters
Were compelled
To leave this home

Milord
He is wiser now
Or at least I guess so
You have studied our problems
You have seen our own
Burn on the pyre of
Our mother’s heart,
Our own cannibalize
Our own.

Milord
How do I scatter
The waters of peace?
How do I stop Daksha’s yagna?
How do I keep intact
The pieces of Sati’s body?

Sigh!* (2016)
Written and translated by Hafiz Ahmed

(After losing everything in the erosion of the Brahmaputra)

What we did not have?
Green paddy fields,
Fish frolicking in fisheries,
Homesteads raised on the laughter of children
Rows upon rows of coconut, betel nut trees,
On Pushura our wide courtyard filled
With people, joy, festivities.
What do we have today?
Only the chain of slavery on our necks
And the whole world to conquer.

Poems | Miyah Poetry Series (Translated by Shalim M Hussain ) - Part I

Over the next few weeks, we will be publishing a series of poems that have come to be known as Miyah poetry (A resistance movement that grew up recently as a response to the threats faced by Muslims in Assam due to the #Dvoter issue )

Shalim adds:
" 'A Charuwa's Proposition' (1939) is probably the first published poem from the Miyah/ Char-Chapori Muslim community of Assam. It is a little rigid and quite benign but it was re-discovered only recently and celebrated as the first self-assertive Miyah poem. 'I Beg to State That', published in 1985 in the aftermath of the Nellie Massacre and the coming to power of the AGP was the first true assertion of Miyahness and started the trend of protest poetry among the Miyah/Char-Chapori people."

An oil painting by Anil Karanjai

A Charuwa’s [1] Proposition (1939)[2]
Maulana Bande Ali

Some say Bengal is my birthplace
And gloat in this bitter accusation
Well, before they came,
My father and my mother and many others
Left their homes, became country-less
How many people belonged to countries then
Who now wear the crowns and masks of leaders?
They are trapped by greed, I know
I quietly observe the language greed speaks.
But I will not tear the plate that feeds me
My faith will not allow me.
This land that I live in
I will revel in this land’s well-being.
The land which my Aai, Abbajan
Left for the heavens
This land is my own, my golden Assam
This land is my holy sanctuary.
The land I scrape to build my house
Is my own land
These are words from the Quran
And in it there is no falsehood
The people of this land are simple, pure
The Assamese are our own
We will share what we have in our shared home
And raise a golden family.

I am not a charuwa, not a pamua[3]
We have also become Asomiya
Of Assam’s land and air, of Assam’s language
We have become equal claimants.
If Assamese dies, so do we
But why will we let it happen?
For newer tribulations we will build new weapons
With new tools we will build a new future.
Where will we find such love, such respect
Where will we find such a place?
Where the plough cuts through earth and reveals gold
Where will we find such a land of grace?
Mother Assam feeds us at her breast
We are her frolicking children
Let us sing in one tune- we are Asomiya
We shall not be Mymensinghia
We will need no ‘borders’
We will be brothers
And when outsiders come to loot us,
We will bar them with our bare chests.

I beg to State That (1985)
Khabir Ahmed

I beg to state that
I am a settler, a hated Miyah
Whatever be the case, my name is
Ismail Sheikh, Ramzan Ali or Majid Miyah
Subject- I am an Assamese Asomiya

I have many things to say
Stories older than Assam’s folktales
Stories older than the blood
Flowing through your veins

After forty years of independence
I have no space in the words of beloved writers
The brush of your scriptwriters doesn’t dip in my picture
My name left unpronounced in assemblies and parliaments
On no martyr’s memorial, on no news report is my name printed
Even in tiny letters.
Besides, you haven’t yet decided what to call me-
Am I Miyah, Asomiya or Neo-Asomiya?

And yet you talk of the river
The river is Assam’s mother, you say
You talk of trees
Assam is the land of blue hills, you say
My spine is tough, steadfast as the trees
The shade of the trees my address…
You talk of farmers, workers
Assam is the land of rice and labour, you say
I bow before paddy, I bow before sweat
For I am a farmer’s boy…

I beg to state that I am a
Settler, a dirty Miyah
Whatever be the case, my name
Is Khabir Ahmed or Mijanur Miyah
Subject- I am an Assamese Asomiya.
Sometime in the last century I lost
My address in the storms of the Padma
A merchant’s boat found me drifting and dropped me here
Since then I have held close to my heart this land, this earth
And began a new journey of discovery
From Sadiya to Dhubri…

Since that day
I have flattened the red hills
Chopped forests into cities, rolled earth into bricks
From bricks built monuments
Laid stones on the earth, burnt my body black with peat
Swam rivers, stood on the bank
And dammed floods
Irrigated crops with my blood and sweat
And with the plough of my fathers, etched on the earth
A…S…S….A…M

Even I waited for freedom
Built a nest in the river reeds
Sang songs in Bhatiyali
When the Father came visiting,
I listened to the music of the Luit
In the evening stood by the Kolong, the Kopili
And saw on their banks gold.

Suddenly a rough hand brushed my face
On a burning night in ‘83
My nation stood on the black hearths of Nellie and screamed
The clouds caught fire at Mukalmua and Rupohi, Juria,
Saya Daka, Pakhi Daka- homes of the Miyahs
Burnt like cemeteries
The floods of ’84 carried my golden harvest
In ’85 a gang of gamblers auctioned me
On the floor of the Assembly.

Whatever be the case, my name
Is Ismail Sheikh, Ramzan Ali or Mazid Miyah
Subject- I am an Assamese Asomiya.
